4 beauty ritual sins that harm skin

1. You use highly fragranced face care products

Many of us tend to do this – we choose either a face or hair care product being lured by its fragrance. The better it smells, the more we trust the cosmetic. Nevertheless, in most cases this smell is owned to synthetic substances that might irritate or trigger allergic reactions. It must be realized that in the first place a face cream is supposed to work, not necessarily smells right. Naturally, if your face product smells in a pleasant way, that’s okay. However, if you store in your bathroom the whole bunch of care products, each of them characterized with intensive aroma that frequently differs from one product to another – just think for a while how your skin will welcome this type of care. Did you know that there is nothing more irritating in creams than fragrances? Try to avoid cosmetics that feature one of the following words – perfum or fragrance – high on their INCI list. If you find one of them somewhere at the end of the list of ingredients, it’s rather okay. It gets worse if the fragrance substances dominate in a product.

2. You exfoliate the skin too frequently

Face scrubs are just marvellous at their working and produce the effect that any other care product isn’t able to do. However, bear in mind that, apart from their beneficial action, they are special-purpose products therefore too frequent application of face scrubs won’t bring you anything positive.

To put it differently, helping your skin to get rid of dead epidermis cells is a good thing to do, providing you do this in moderation. If you apply face scrub too frequently, you deprive your skin from natural protective barrier. This leads to dehydration. Also, without the protective layer your facial skin becomes a good environment for bacteria. To sum up, making use of face scrub once a week will do (even if the packaging says that a product can be used 2-3 times per week, don’t do it).

3. You wipe the face with a toner too vigorously

Even if you don’t use your full power to do it, face rubbing with a cotton pad dampen with a toner or emulsion is a frequently made mistake. Instead of delicate tapping, facial skin receives another round of epidermis exfoliation. And instead of toning skin, you disturb its protective layer. It’s worth realising that various products serve different purposes, so if you want to cleanse skin, reach for cleansing cosmetics not for toning products. Remember that you irritate the skin if you rub it with a cotton pad. The best way to apply a toner is to use your fingertips to pat the product with. You will be surprised how your skin condition improves after being treated in this way, and the improvement will be noticeable within a few days.

4. You don’t moisturise your skin sufficiently

Naturally, it’s essential to supply skin with water from the inside. Probably every other person reading this article right now thinks that since they replenish the body with massive amounts of water by drinking it, there is no need to apply moisturising creams. However, in order prevent water from disappearing from epidermis, it has to be provided with a protection. In other words, you must build a special occlusive layer on skin surface thanks to which epidermis won’t lose water. You can use for example oil face serum or hydro-cream.
