How to Choose the Right Acid for the Skin Type & Problem?

Acid peels belong to the most popular facials. Why acids provide such an effective skin conditioning? Because they enlarge the distance between cells in skin, which weakens the bindings that connect them. As a result, the dead cells detach and exfoliate. It is a common feature of all acids which actually differ from each other having some unique properties and purposes. Some of them nullify skin blemishes, others even out the skin tone, regulate sebum secretion, make scars less visible or have moisturising power. Considering all that, how to choose the right acid for a skin type and problem?

Salicylic acid has anti-fungal, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory action. Depending on the concentration, it can be included in acne skin care products or have exfoliating and regenerating properties. Salicylic acid penetrates the sebum layer and gets inside the pores, tightening and cleansing them. Salicylic acid facials are recommended for acne treatment, fighting the signs of skin photo-aging and brightening discolored skin. This acid is mostly used for facial peels.

Ferulic Acid for Wrinkles

Ferulic acid is a strong antioxidant, upgrades the state of skin, evens out its tone and protects it from the photo-aging. Ferulic acid peels are dedicated to mature skin which is bothered by ageing, loss of suppleness, pigmentation and post-sun spots, wrinkles and dryness.

Glycolic Acid for Hyperpigmentation

Glycolic acid has numerous uses: skin lightening, illuminating and moisturizing, making epidermis smooth and reducing wrinkles. Its molecules easily penetrate the skin and – consequently – stimulate cells to produce collagen and elastin. Different concentrations of glycolic acid are used in facials, depending on the needs of skin.

There are far more acids and each one fulfils different functions. Lactobionic acid is the best for irritated skin, lactic acid for scars whereas azelaic acid for comedones.
